The difference between softwood and hardwood.

2 min read

The main issue with trying to understand the difference between softwood and hardwood is that you naturally assume that hardness is the main indicator. The thing about the difference between hardwood and softwood is that it makes no difference whatsoever. The hardness of wood is not an indicator and an illustration of this is balsa wood. Everyone should remember balsa wood. It is mainly used in modelling work. It has no use in structural work as it is thin and breaks easily. It is classed as a hardwood. What are the classifications?

Examples of hardwood are as follows. Oak, Beech, Ash and Balsa.  The first three are very hard and are used in furniture and construction. What defines a hardwood tree is if it sheds its leaves in the autumn/winter time. A hardwood tree is a deciduous tree. The scientific name for it is angiosperm. It uses flowers to attract pollinating insects. This has meant it is extremely successful at making new trees.

The Softwood tree is an Evergreen tree. It does not shed its leave. Examples of the softwood are Cedars, Pine and Conifers. The Softwood tree uses nuts and acorns to make more of its kind. This means they tend to be stuck in one area rather than randomly spread out. Their scientific name is gymnosperm.

Whatever type they are they all need to have the attention of a Tree Surgeon Bournemouth way like Kieran Boyland.
